Form & Convention

How Do Companies Pull Us Into Their Product? Simple! Through Form And Convention!!!

Piranha Film Poster

Form: Poster Advertisement for the film 'Piranha'
Convention: Bold white title immediately attracts us to the film poster followed by the viewing of the attractive female on a float to attract a male audience. Overly exaggerated Piranha makes us assume its a comedy whilst the colour red on the fish itself make us think that it could also be aggressive and could lead to someone/people dying.

Form: Magazine Cover (Gossip Magazine 'Heat')
Convention: Lots of stuff going on on this magazine cover to give the reader a look on what might be inside the magazine. Big Bold Colours to attract readers to certain parts of the cover, particularly the magazine TITLE and the different story titles like 'SKINNY ALEXA' & 'SHOCK LOVE U-TURNS'

Form: Album Cover (Band: Badly Drawn Boy)
Convention: All of the important sections of the album are in a red box in bold white text. These choices in colours are really effective in captivating the buyer's attention due to the red standing out and the white text contrasts well to keep the reader reading and hopefully buying.

Form: Comic Strip (Comic = The Watchmen)
Convention: This Comic strip from 'The Watchmen' is easy to read and keeps the reader (presumably a young male) interested by highlighting key word in bold that emphasise the characters emotion. Furthermore, there isn't really a lot to read on the pages and this will help encourage the reader to read more and to buy the next copy as most comics normally end on  a cliffhanger.

FormAdvertisement (Product: Hoover)
Convention: This well thought out poster symbolises that their product (a Hoover) works really well, and its suction is like that of an aeroplane if the window was smashed so everything would be sucked out of that window in an instant.

Form: Book Cover (Book: 'The Girl Who kicked The Hornets nest')
Convention: The main image is of a girl who seems to be staring directly at you and this can seem quite intimidating and ery. However on the contrary to the image, the background is green, which to some might have no significant meaning, but the colour green has a hidden meaning of life, renewal and energy, this combined with the scattered typography of the title with some bold and some normal fonts could lead us to believe that the girl in the book could be starting a new life but something goes wrong...
